Historical Context | Reflection: Flora's Neighbourhood

This is a real map of London created in the late nineteenth century known as Maps Descriptive of London Poverty from Charles Booth's Inquiry into Life and Labour in London (1886-1903). This portion of the map shows where my OC character, Flora, from my Kuroshitsuji fanfiction, Reflection, lives. It was an area of Whitechapel known as St. Bartholomew, and the street she lives on was known as Somerford Street. See if you can spot it.

Each inhabited building was colour-coded to indicate the occupants' social class. The key is as follows:

  • Black - Extremely poor/criminal
  • Dark Blue - Very poor
  • Light Blue - Poor
  • Purple - Mixed groups
  • Pink - Usually comfortable
  • Red - Middle class
  • Yellow - Upper middle class/wealthy

If you're interested in finding out more, or looking at the rest of London, you can see the full map and inquiry information on the website, Charles Booth's London at booth.lse.ac.uk.
