Fanfiction Review: Friends By Day, Enemies By Night

This is definitely one of those rare gems of fanfiction that just immediately sucks you in and has you fully invested in the story. I don't think I've ever been so obsessed with one particular fanfiction in all my life; I was constantly craving more and never wanted to see it end. The fanfiction I'm talking about today is none other than Friends By Day, Enemies By Night by dristi5683.

It's very hard to get me addicted and obsessed with a fanfiction as I'm really picky, but dristi5683 managed to completely draw me in and have me fully invested in her story. If you've already read her story, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about, but if you haven't read it yet, then I definitely highly recommend that you should do so. It's one of those stories that you just can't put down.

"With Chat Noir now working for Hawk Moth, Marinette must learn why and bring him back to her side...or defeat them both. To make matters worse, university will soon start and she's moving in with a roommate: A.A. Whoever that is."

I was still fairly new to the Miraculous Ladybug fandom when I came across this fanfiction. I was searching for fanfiction to read in order to help me get a fix when I stumbled across this one. It was still fairly new when I found it, and I think it was only about five chapters in. But as soon as I saw the description, I knew that I was in for something fun and amazing. So I decided to check it out to see if it measured up to what it could potentially be.

It ended up exceeding all of my expectations.

The plot of this fanfiction follows Marinette and Adrien as they are now older and about to attend university. Some time ago, Chat Noir suddenly turned against her and began working for Hawkmoth, for reasons unbeknownst to Ladybug. Chat Noir has effectively been brainwashed by his father, Hawkmoth, and wants to help bring his mother back. Meanwhile, Marinette is looking for a place to live and thinks she is onto something good with a potential roommate who goes only by the initials A.A. She soon discovers that this mysterious person is, you guessed it, Adrien Agreste. She becomes insecure and unsure about moving in with him, however relents after Adrien insists.

And so the story of cat and mouse begins. Ladybug and Chat Noir are now determined to defeat each other, while Ladybug also hopes to get to the bottom of everything and maybe bring Chat Noir back on side. At the same time, they're both developing feelings for each other while living together, completely oblivious to the other's true identity.

The plot of the story is very much like a Mr and Mrs Smith scenario which is a very entertaining read. Even though the Chat Noir turning evil trope is done to death, by myself included, dristi5683 keeps it fresh and interesting. There are so many twists and turns within the plot, some of them predictable, some of them not. However, just because some elements were predictable, that doesn't mean the story is any less interesting. It still keeps you on the edge of your seat. I think the fact dristi5683 had both predictable and unpredictable elements kept everyone on their toes, wondering if they were going to be right about the situation, which only served to further draw me into the story. I love a story that makes me think and theorise about everything that's going on.

If there's one technique that dristi5683 managed to absolutely nail within this story, it's dramatic irony. This story is jam packed with it and I just lapped it all up. It made me want to tear my hair out so much while I was reading this. Watching the characters go around completely oblivious, and knowing the heartbreak and drama that was about to hit them was incredible intense, and had me screaming at my computer screen. My heart was constantly in my mouth, wondering how everything was going to be revealed and how everyone was going to react. With each chapter that was released, I was instantly desperate to find out what happened next.

The romance in the Marichat and Adrienette moments were also amazing and cute to read. Those are the ships that this story primarily focuses on. I was constantly squealing in delight and wanted to bang their heads together to just make them get together already. However, I did find the whole Marinette being with both Chat Noir and Adrien (unaware that they are the same person) to be a little bit odd at times. I wish that Marinette had maybe expressed more confusion and unwillingness to see two people at once. Seen as she was unaware they were the same person, she was kind of cheating, and she just seemed okay with it most of the time. I just found the situation to be a bit weird at times, but that's only really a nitpick. I still really enjoyed the chemistry between Marinette and Adrien, as well as between Marinette and Chat Noir. If you're someone who loves their cute ship moments, then this is definitely the fic for you.

I also liked how the relationship between them was slowly built up. I've noticed in a lot of fics, they're quick in getting together, however, this story took the time to slowly build up to it. The chemistry between them is clear from the start, but as Marinette and Adrien are both older in these fics, they both take time to get to know each other again as they're both more mature. It made the moment they finally got together much more satisfying. Slow build up is one thing that this story is excellent at. The pace isn't all over the place, it's slow and steady, but not the kind of slow that makes a reader become bored. There's always something going on.

The story also remained quite realistic in terms of what emotions the characters were experiencing, especially in how certain situations effected them. Chat Noir/Adrien's situation in the story was probably the most heartbreaking. I was constantly screaming that he should just talk to Ladybug, but of course if things were that easy, it wouldn't make a very good story.

Another aspect of this story that was very well done, was Chloe. I'm normally a huge hater of Chloe. I really don't like her at all (that's not to say I don't appreciate the necessity of the character in the show). One thing I've noticed about fics that are set in the future is that Chloe is often suddenly really nice and her character does a complete one-eighty. But in this fic, dristi5683 has been really clever. There's still the Chloe we all love to hate, she's still quite spoiled and entitled, and has that notorious mean streak, however, you can also see how much she has matured and mellowed out over the years, especially towards the end of the story. I found that approach with her character really admirable and it made a lot of sense.

This story is incredibly well written, with little to no errors. I really feel like dristi5683 managed to really get into the mindset of Miraculous Ladybug to produce content where everyone felt like they were in character, with just the right amount of believable maturity added seen as the characters are aged up to eighteen in this story. The action scenes in particular were quite well written and those moments often left me breathless with how fast paced and intense those moments could be. I really feel like there's something in this fanfiction for everyone. There's romance, there's drama, sad moments, the inclusion of different ships, action, cute moments and funny moments.

Overall, I rate this story 9/10. It is definitely a story I highly recommend that you read, as you won't regret it. The amount of effort and planning that went into this story is clear to see. It will constantly have you on the edge of your seat and screaming over the frustrating situations, but in a good way. Each chapter will leave you incredibly excited and desperate for more. The story kept me hooked right until the very end, and I was sad when it was over, but the ending was incredibly satisfying. It's quite a long read, so if you like longer stories, then this is a story for you. However, I do recommend you wait until you have plenty of time to read it as you will end up binge reading this story until the early hours of the morning. This story is just that addictive. It's a more dialogue heavy story, so if you prefer fanfictions to be straight forward and to the point, you don't have to worry about skim reading paragraphs that have lots of detail. It's a very easy read.

  1. Thank you for the recommendation, this fic is amazing! I originally passed over it because I'm not usually a big fan of adrienette, but you're right the author writes the ships very well.
