Fanfiction Review: Peeping Tomcat

I want to preface this review by mentioning the fact that I am a very picky person. I can be especially picky when it comes to fanfiction. A story really has to engulf me in its world, it has to have amazing ideas and it has to be well written. It has to completely capture my attention because, as much as I love reading, I have a short attention span when it comes down to me having to sit down and read something. It's always hard for me to find fanfiction that manages to completely capture my attention and keep me reading. Preferably something that will blow my mind. And let me tell you, Peeping Tomcat by LycoRouge does just that.

This is seriously hands down, one of the best Miraculous Ladybug fanfictions I have ever read. So what is it about this story that managed to blow me away? Why should you guys definitely check it out? Hopefully this review will be able to accurately convey just how amazing this story is, which is unfortunately highly underrated.

"Something called to Adrien, and before he knew it, he was addicted to sitting outside Marinette's window as Chat Noir; just watching her. His voyeuristic habit needs to stop, but things have gotten far too complicated now that he realizes he's growing a crush on her."

So I was just mindlessly browsing fanfiction one day, desperate to get a Miraculous Ladybug fix, which I'm sure a lot of you know how that feels. It had been a while since I checked out some new fanfiction as I had been so preoccupied with writing my own. That's when the cover for this story caught my attention. Peeping Tomcat? That was certainly the most unusual and amusing name for a fanfiction I had ever come across. I had never heard of LycoRogue before, nor had I seen any of her work. I read the description and I knew instantly that this was an amazing idea. I just hoped I wouldn't be disappointed by how it was executed. Not to mention it had potential to involve moments from my favourite ship. So I decided to give it a read.

Before I knew it, it was 4am.

The plot of the story is mainly centered around Adrien/Chat Noir. After a tiring day of battling an akuma and his father ordering him around, Adrien decides to transform into Chat Noir and just go for a run around the city to let off some steam and feel free. It is while doing this he happens upon Marinette's apartment and ends up listening in on her before watching her dance around her room. Chat Noir ends up becoming increasingly fascinated; he has never seen this side of Marinette before. He enjoys watching how free she looks and how much she enjoys herself. However, after nearly being discovered, he quickly runs off, swearing he will never spy on his friend like that again.

He ends up doing just that.

We then enter a cycle of Chat Noir spying on Marinette to catch glimpses of her infectious happiness and see her true personality, not to mention the fact that he enjoys seeing her with her family, longing to receive the love and attention she does. Of course, it starts to grow increasingly obvious to the reader that Chat Noir is developing a crush on Marinette. However, Chat Noir still insists that he loves Ladybug and the resulting confusion and low self-esteem leads to some dramatic and emotional moments.

Emotional moments is where this story really shines. As a reader, I love to have an in depth look into what is going through a character's head and the emotions that they are experiencing. LycoRogue manages to capture emotions so well, that each chapter always leaves you breathless. You really experience Adrien's emotions with him, and that's something a writer always longs to achieve. We want our work to feel real, like you're right there with the characters, and have the story resonate with you as much as possible, and LycoRouge had done this so incredibly well that I was almost jealous. The angst that Adrien experiences in this story is so deliciously unbearable. Not to mention the heart stopping moments of wondering if Marinette is ever going to get caught with Tikki, exposing her secret identity as Ladybug.

Speaking of Adrien, I found it really interesting and refreshing that the story is told purely from Adrien's point of view. That is something I rarely see, nor ever do myself, so I really enjoyed that change. It was great to get a deep look inside his mind, and the confusion and self-loathing he experienced from being in love with both Marinette and Ladybug. I was left a mess by how much I felt sorry for this cinnamon roll, but I also just wanted to smash his head against a brick wall and yell at him to either talk to Ladybug/Marinette about what he was experiencing. But alas, things are never that simple, and it wouldn't be a good story if they were.

As for the characterisation...wow. Just wow. Never in my life have I come across a fanfiction that is so accurate to the source material and has the characters so in character. I had to blink a few times just to remind myself that I wasn't reading an actual episode. Everything about it felt so real. The plot, the characters, the akumas, the drama...literally everything felt like it could be part of a real life episode of the show. I wondered if Thomas Astruc or some of the other writers had created a fanfiction account and had posted this story.

But no. It was all down to the hard work and dedication of LycoRogue. She truly is an incredibly talented writer and deserves so much more love and respect. There literally isn't any constructive criticism that I can think of. Her grammar is impeccable, her plot is genius, the characters are on point and the drama and emotions just keep you sucked in and fully invested in the story. My only wish was that it was longer, but maybe that would have ruined it and is just me being greedy.

Luckily, the story is now complete, so anyone who wants to start reading it now doesn't have to start foaming at the mouth, waiting for updates like I did. However, there is a sequel for the story currently in the works which has me incredibly excited to see where LycoRogue takes the story next. The story is quite short, only seventeen chapters long, and the plot is simple, making it easy to read. If you're a fan of the MariChat, Adrienette and LadyNoir ships, love stories that stick close to the source material and love stories that go into detail about a character's emotions and experiences, then this is definitely the fanfic for you!

Overall, I give Peeping Tomcat a 10/10. This is one of those stories that immediately hooks you and has you binge reading until the early hours of the morning.
